
Does anyone remember those old TV commercials with the slogan, "Reading is fundamental?" (Hint: it helps if you're over forty.)
Sometimes, I think of that slogan when I'm watching the last few minutes of a class at the Independent Karate School. But what does reading have to do with karate?
Typically, an IKS master instructor will use the last few minutes of class time to make announcements, ask assistant instructors to demonstrate, or discuss a concept specific to the martial arts. But every so often, these closing remarks focus on the importance of education.

Just last week, our headmaster urged all the students present to read over the summer, for some part of every day if possible. Coming from him, it has much more impact than anything I could ever say.
One of the things I really appreciate about the Independent Karate School is that when it comes to their students, they want the whole person to succeed. And the good example of the instructors helps to make that happen.
