Beach at Wasserman Park Re-Opens

E.Coli bacteria levels have subsided to levels have dropped to safe levels for swimming.

The beach at Wasserman Park on Lake Naticook has re-opened to swimmers and waders.

Merrimack Parks and Recreation Director Sherry Kalish sent out an e-mail about an hour ago saying that the latest water results were in and the readings were good.

"Both results were very good," Kalish said. "The beach is safe for swimming and reopened ... The results were 4.1 and 2.0.  Anything under 88 is safe."

At the time, Kalish and Sonya Carlson, beach program coordinator with the Department of Environmental Services, agreed that it was likely fecal matter in the water left behind by ducks that had been congregating near the dock, that caused the elevated levels.

Because the town doesn't test the water over the weekend, the beach was closed for five days until Monday's test results could be read today.

The town tests the water once a week, on Tuesdays, Kalish said last week. However, when bacteria readings return an abnormal result, the water is then tested every day until the readings are normal again.
