Beginnings matter at the Independent Karate School

In any household with kids, the big news right now is the start of school.  Some Independent Karate School students started the academic year last week.  Our students in the Merrimack public schools are just embarking on it now, and we wish them all the best.

At the Independent Karate School, we know that beginnings are important.  At this time of year, we encourage all our students to focus on their studies and make a good start.  We are also careful to ensure that any students who are new to the Independent Karate School are guided through our class routine and made to feel welcome.

A week or two ago, one of our white belts, a very small boy who just began taking classes, got his first opportunity to spar.  (Sparring at the Independent Karate School is on a non-contact point basis.)  His selected opponent?  A 5' 11", 180-pound black belt.

Why on earth would our head instructor set up such a match?  Because the teenage black belt's job was to gently and carefully show the little boy how to start.  He slowly extended kicks and punches in the little boy's general direction.  He raised his guard to expose his abdomen and encouraged the little boy to notice.  And bit by bit, the little boy gained confidence and began trying to score.  He has a lot to learn, but everyone has to start somewhere.

Feel like starting something new?  Come visit us at the Independent Karate School, at any scheduled class time.  Classes in Merrimack meet Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 6 pm at the VFW near the Common Man.  Hope to see you there!
