Round One Goes to ...

Men's 400 freestyle

I like a good competition and in these games I think two match ups between Phelps and Lochte are at the top of my list to watch.  I have been going back and forth as to who the under dog is ...

I feel the media has made Phelps out to be untouchable, Team USA's gold boy. Until this week, now that games are about to begin the more I learn about Lochte the more I feel he just might pull the rug out from under Phelps! I mean have you seen him flipping the giant tire down the road! Who does that!?!? He called himself crazy, non traditional. He even ate three meals a day at McDonald 's during the Beijing games. Then you have Phelps with his adorable mother and sisters always poolside cheering him on.  I still love that photo of him wearing that stack of medals around his neck after Beijing. Knowing that this is his swan song makes the idea of him breaking even more records that much more exciting and emotional.

So who took that first medal today in the 400 freestyle? Ryan Lochte takes the gold by a mile! He was chasing the world record set by Phelps right up until the final lap. On pace to beat it as I was holding my breathe for him, I felt like I was sinking.  As for the two time defending champ, not even on the medal podium. Phew ... Now I can breathe and try to get the water out of my ears. Lochte said it himself, "These games are going to be unforgettable."
