Good Samaritan Helps Save Ducklings in Merrimack

Reports of ducklings on the Everett Turnpike lead to action by drivers, state police; babies are now with a wildlife rehabilitator.

MERRIMACK, NH - Quick action by a good Samaritan as well as others calling New Hampshire State Police appears to have saved the life of some ducklings that were trying to cross the Everett Turnpike on April 29, 2016.

According to NHSP, troopers from Troop B were sent to the area of Exit 10 for at around noon today after receiving “multiple calls” from drivers of about 10 ducklings attempting to cross the highway.

When they arrived at the scene, troopers found the Samaritan – later identified as Don Wylks of Manchester – who stopped and was able to rescue four of the ducklings that were attempting to cross the road.

“(He was able to stop and corral the ducks and keep them from going back into the roadway,” according to Sgt. S. Callinan of the NHSP.

A trooper was able to transport the ducklings to Wings of the Dawn Wildlife Rehabilitation Center in Henniker, where wildlife rehabilitator Maria Colby will tend to the ducklings.

Callinan, in a statement, reminded motorists not to stop on the highway for animals trapped or injured as it could be dangerous to do so.

“Troopers would recommend calling the authorities with a good location and description of the incident,” he noted, “so they can respond with the proper equipment in a safe and timely fashion.”

The is the second time in the last week that New Hampshire officials have helped to rescued ducklings. Exeter Police and town employees rescued 11 ducklings in that town after they fell into a sewer pipe.
