Hot Dogz for Alzheimer’s 2023

Article written by: Bruce Angus

Bob Bergin is a long-time resident of Merrimack, a long-time parishioner of Our Lady of Mercy Roman Catholic Church, a long-time member of the Knights of Columbus, and a past grand knight of Our Lady Queen of Peace chapter of the Knights of Columbus. Through his vision and leadership the annual Hot Dogz for Alzheimer’s event began at OLM in Merrimack in 2016 during which they sold 300 Hot Dogz. This event has grown over the years to the point where the last event in 2022 saw 2500 Hot Dogz sold resulting in $13,000 being raised for the Alzheimer’s Association. To date this event has so far raised $47,000 for the Alzheimer’s Association.

Hot Dogz for Alzheimer’s has grown to be a Merrimack community event. The Town Manager, the Merrimack Library Director, Merrimack State Reps, local businesses, and some High School youth have all invested their time and energies in support. Our local first responders, while always ready to respond immediately when a call goes out, nonetheless lend their supportive presence at Hot Dogz for Alzheimer’s.

An event of this size would not be possible without the support of many local businesses. Everything from chips, soda, water, hot dogs and rolls, are being donated as a sign of the support of our local businesses.

Bob Bergin is quick to point out that the value of Hot Dogz for Alzheimer’s event is not confined to the money raised. It’s value is also found in the opportunities it provides for people to learn about Alzheimer’s and to connect with others whose lives are impacted by Alzheimer’s disease. These connections can be transformational in that people feel that they aren’t facing Alzheimer’s challenges alone.

None of the above would be taking place without Bob’s vision and dedication. Yet beyond vision and dedication one of the greatest assets Bob brings to his leadership is his humility. Bob is by no means an introvert; yet if you listen to him promote Hot Dogz for Alzheimer’s, it’s never about “him”, his focus is on the good that can be done for the Alzheimer’s Association, the dedication of his team, the active involvement of local public officials, the investment of local businesses, and the opportunities for people to connect.
