Kitchen Fire Extinguished on Derry Street
Merrimack Fire says oil in a pan left unattended on a stove caused the blaze.
On Friday Sept, 25, 2015, at 8:29 p.m. the Merrimack Fire Department was dispatched to 5 Derry St. for a reported structure fire, according to a press statement.
Merrimack Engines 1 and 2, Ambulance 1, and Fire Marshal Manuele responded. Merrimack Engine 1, under the command of Captain Matt Duke, arrived on scene at 8:36 and reported an extinguished kitchen fire in a split entry style home with moderate smoke throughout the house. The homeowner reported that everyone, 2 adults and 2 children were out of the home
The homeowner was in the process of cooking when a frying pan with oil ignited and began burning the over the stove microwave and cabinets. The homeowner removed the burning pan from the home and then extinguished the flames with a pan of water.

Fire personnel began venting smoke from the home and removed the stove and microwave from the kitchen. After washing down several hot spots and ensuring the fire had not spread into the wall the home was turned back over to the homeowner.
The occupants were assessed for smoke inhalation. One occupant was treated for burns to the hand by Ambulance 1’s crew but declined to be transported to a hospital.

Fire personnel completed overhaul and cleared the scene at 9:20 p.m. The cause of the fire was determined to be accidental, due to a pan of oil being left on the stove unattended.
