Learning to listen at the Independent Karate School

This week, our headmaster took a few minutes at the end of class to remind our students to be good listeners in school.  In fact, he told them that when their teachers ask for quiet, or otherwise indicate that it's time to listen, Independent Karate School students should be the first to pipe down and tune in.

Listening skills are important in martial arts training, of course.  For example, class sessions commonly begin with "basics."  During this kind of practice, the head instructor calls out a series of kicks, punches, and other movements for the students to execute.  Commands are issued at a rapid pace, and students don't know what move they will be asked for next.  They must listen carefully to the instructor if they are going to keep up and perform the correct action.

Listening is considered so vital at the Independent Karate School that the highlight of our annual Christmas party is the big game of Simon Says.  (This is lots of fun with a big room full of people who all know some karate: "Simon Says, half moon forward with the right, number 1 of the eight-point blocking system!")  All ranks and ages below black belt compete together, and the winner is often someone a bit unexpected!

In any case, the hope is that all this listening practice will help our students in many arenas, not just on the training floor . . . and we think it does.
