SB 352-FN is an act establishing an early detection cancer screening pilot program for active and retired firefighters. The bill allocates up to $5 million dollars from the general fund until FY 2027 to offer any combination (or one) of the following for active and retired firefighters: a blood test, ultrasound of vital organs, and a lung CT. All testing is optional.
This bill came to Division III in House Finance of which I am the Vice Chairman. During the hearing, it came to light that cancer caused 66% of career firefighter line-of-duty deaths from 2002 to 2019, cancer caused 70% of line-of-duty deaths for career firefighters in 2016, firefighters have a 9% higher risk of being diagnosed with cancer and a 14% higher risk of dying from cancer than the general U.S. population. This senate bill passed through both the Senate (24-0) and House with amendment (on a voice vote) and was signed by the Governor on July 2, 2024. As I said in Division III House Finance Committee, “SB 352 serves those who serve us.”

I so enjoy marching in the annual Merrimack 4th of July parade and seeing friends and supporters along the route! A special thank you to those that marched with me distributing “Maureen Mooney for State Rep” lollipops! Independence Day is an unique holiday whereby the community comes together to celebrate.
