Legislative Updates from Concord for May, 2024
Greetings!
The New Hampshire legislature is busy meeting deadlines to finish the two-year session. This fall, the election dates are: State Primary on September 10, 2024 and the General Election Day on November 5, 2024.
The House Finance Committee just finished several consecutive days of making recommendations on spending bills. This is tedious work since the committee is charged with prioritizing spending and examining each bill for responsible spending. All the while, it is important to remember that the money spent is taxpayer dollars. Here are some recent bills the House Finance Committee considered:

SB 352-FN (AN ACT establishing an early detection cancer screening pilot program for active and retired firefighters). This bill allows for a pilot program for early detection cancer screenings available to approximately 4,000 active and retired firefighters. The cost is $5 million over three years out of the general fund. Recommended by House Finance Committee 25-0.
SB 393-FN (AN ACT relative to making an appropriation to the department of environmental services to fund regional drinking water infrastructure). This will enhance the regional drinking water infrastructure to address contamination issues from PFAS, and meet increased water demands. The cost is $2 million out of the general funds and $4.5 million from federal funds and the Drinking Water and Groundwater Trust Fund (RSA 485-F). Recommended by House Finance Committee 25-0.

SB 604-FN (AN ACT providing a death benefit for a New Hampshire hospital security officer killed in the line of duty). This bill will provide the family of Bradley Haas $100,000 from general funds. Officer Haas was murdered while working as a security guard at the state-owned New Hampshire State Hospital last November. Recommended by House Finance Committee 22-2.
