Brush up and freshen up!

Brush maintenance isn't just for your hair brushes, cleaning your make-up brushes is an absolute must! If this isn’t something you do regularly, it’s definitely something you want to start making time for every two to four weeks. Why? Well, because makeup brushes collect bacteria, dead skin cells, oils, dirt, and old makeup, it’s important that you clean them in order to maintain clean and healthy skin.

According to make-up and skin care professionals, you’ll want to clean your foundation and blush brushes at least once a week, eyeshadow brushes every two to three days, and your eyeliner brushes after every use (assuming you use eyeliner sealer). For acne-prone skin, brushes should be washed daily or at least more frequently than for people with clear skin. To learn how to properly clean your makeup brushes, follow the four simple steps below.

1. Wet Bristles Under Warm Water

Wet the bristles of the brush under warm water. Make sure that the brush is facing downward to avoid getting water inside the handle of the brush. Also, try not to wet the entire brush; you want to focus on the top half part of the bristles.

2. Apply Face Wash or Shampoo to Bristles

Apply face wash or shampoo to the bristles of your brush, baby shampoo is a great choice. Give the tip of the bristles a good cleaning by gently massaging the shampoo into the brush. Depending on the condition of your brush, you may have to add more shampoo.

3. Rinse Until Water Runs Clear

After you have massaged the shampoo gently into the bristles, run them under water and rinse until the water is clear. Be patient! Don’t try to hurry the process, as you may not get the deep cleaning you want if you don’t wait for all the color to come out.

4. Run Bristles Against Paper Towel and Let Dry

Reshape and dry the brush by running it over a paper towel. Then, let it air dry on its side. Remember, you won’t be able to use your brushes until they are dry, so make sure that you pick a good time to clean them.
