Mass. Man Charged With Attempted Theft

Police say Chelmsford man tried to purchase motorcycle with money from a closed bank account.

A Massachusetts man charged with attempted theft by deception on Tuesday for attempting to steal a motorcycle from a Merrimack resident back in September, police say.

Jordan Geoffrey, 28, of 194 Groton Road, N. Chelmsford, Mass., was transported to Merrimack from a jail in Massachusetts to be processed on the charge after police learned when trying to serve a warrant to him that he was incarcerated on unspecified charges in the Bay State.

Police say they opened an investigation on Sept. 9, when a resident of Merrimack reported that a man who agreed to purchase a motorcycle from them on Craigslist attempted to defraud them by closing the account used to purchase the bike.

According to the seller's account, they met Geoffrey in Merrimack and conducted sale, and upon completion of the transaction, the seller was to follow Geoffrey home with the motorcycle to deliver it. The seller of the motorcycle was being followed by a parent to provide transportation home after delivery of the motorcycle. After the monetary transaction had occurred, while en route to Chelmsfor, the seller’s parent contacted the bank that the funds were drawn on and learned that the account had been terminated, police say. The parent was able to prevent the delivery of the motorcycle and the parties then reported the incident to police.

Geoffrey was indicted by a grand jury in New Hampshire in April based on the charge presented and further proceedings are pending in Hillsborough County Superior Court-South.
