Merrimack Fire: Stay Off the Ice!

Fire Marshal John Manuele warns that the warm temperatures have melted lakes, ponds, and streams.

MERRIMACK, NH - The Merrimack Fire Department is warning residents to stay off the ice!

Unlike last year’s long, snowy and bitterly cold winter, New Hampshire is enjoying a warmer and less snowy winter this year, according to Fire Marshal John Manuele.

“Because of this none of Merrimack’s bodies of water have frozen enough to safely walk upon,” he noted in a press statement. “The recent spring-like temperatures have melted most of the ice and it will take several weeks of consistently below freezing temperatures to make ice thick enough to walk on.”

At this time the long range forecast does not show the type of cold needed to freeze the ice to a safe thickness.

“Therefore we recommend citizens stay off all Ice and treat it as it is unsafe,” Manuele stated. “ If a person or pet does fall through the ice call 911 immediately! We have the equipment and training to safely perform a rescue.”
