Police Bust Local Man on Check Fraud
Merrimack police allege the "theft by deception" occurred at Sovereign Bank on Sept. 25.

Merrimack police arrested Allen Smith for alleged fraud at Sovereign Bank.
Smith, 21, of 1 Scituate Place, No. 5, Merrimack, is accused of trying to cash two fraudulent checks in excess of $1,500.
Police responded to the bank at high noon on Sept. 25, fielding a call of a report of attempted fraud. Upon arrival, they investigated and learned a man, later identified as Smith, attempted to cash the checks.

Smith left before police arrived, but officers located him a short distance away, and was picked up. He was taken to the police station, but experienced a medical issue and was transported to the Elliot Hospital.
Upon his release, Sept. 27, he was arrested and charged with forgery and attempted theft. He was placed on $5,000 bail, and was scheduled to appear in court Sept. 28 on the charges.
