NHWAY Hosts All-State Youth and Middle School Wrestling Tournament

Bow, NH (February 12, 2023) and Keene, NH (February 19, 2022) - The New Hampshire Wrestling Association for Youth (NHWAY), a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing youth wrestling, hosted its annual State Championship Tournament. Over 600 wrestlers age 5 to 15 years old competed over two days in a tournament that included both club and school-based teams for the largest youth all-state championship in New Hampshire history. The tournament featured a female-only division and team competition.

Championship Day 1 was held at Bow High School on February 12th and included three age divisions, age 6 and under (6U), age 8 and under (8U), and age 10 and under (10U).

25 NHWAY State Champions were crowned across the three age divisions. Notable repeat champions include Brody Murray from the Salem Bulldogs who grabbed his fourth State Championship in the 10U age division while Matthew Ely from Agoge Wrestling Club and Ethan Braley of the Londonderry Raptors each grabbed a second title competing in the 8U and 10U divisions respectively.

Championship Day 2 was held at Keene High School on February 19th and included three age divisions, age 12 and under (12U), age 15 and under (15U), and a girls-only age 15 and under (G15U). Female wrestlers were allowed to choose to compete in either the coed brackets or the girls-only division.

35 State Champions were crowned across the three age divisions. Notable repeat champions include Caden Smith from Woodbury Middle School, Rhys Dewar from Merrimack Youth Wrestling and Brian Waller-Reitano wrestling as an independent, who all became NHWAY’s first five-time State Champions competing in the 15U age division. Brogan Beckman from Smitty’s Barn grabbed his fourth title in the 12U division while Chase Mustapha of Woodbury Middle School, Ian McCubrey of the Nashua Boys & Girls Club, and Walter Cotito wrestling as independent, each picked up title number three. Zach Paris (12U-Salem Bulldogs), Noah Gendreau (12U-Hudson MS), and Francisco Juvera (15U-Milford MS) all secured a second state championship.

The competition drew 634 of the best youth wrestlers from across the state filling brackets ranging from 43 pounds up to 260 pounds. Wrestlers were distributed among 6 age divisions in mostly double elimination brackets with 12 brackets requiring a 32-man bracket to determine a champion and 2 brackets that were of the 64-man variety with 37 and 34 wrestlers entered respectively.

In all, a total of 60 state champions were crowned in an exciting two days of wrestling.

The Salem Bulldogs took home the Club Team Title while the Timberlane Middle School repeated for the second consecutive year as School Team Championship. The Bedford Lurgio Middle School took home the first-ever Girls Team Championship, followed closely by Runner-up Rochester Middle School.
