Patience is a virtue at the Independent Karate School

Is it my imagination, or has it been snowing a lot on Tuesdays and Thursdays this winter?

There is certainly no class tonight, so it looks like our Merrimack students are going to have to wait till Thursday till their next chance for instruction.  That can be a little frustrating, with our school tournament coming up at the end of March.  However, just because our students can't come to class, that doesn't mean they can't make progress.

A snow day is a perfectly reasonable time to practice forms, for example. These are the set routines of moves that students learn at each rank.  (Advanced students who may need to jump: please use common sense when selecting a location to practice outside the dojo.)  Students can also certainly practice their inventory of defenses against a punch.  Even without a training partner, this is good for muscle memory.

One thing the Independent Karate School does NOT want student to practice at home is board breaking.  As I described in my last post, board breaking can be a lot of fun.  It is not a lot of fun if you hurt yourself due to mistakes in setup or technique.  Advanced students know the drill, and our headmaster recently made sure that our beginners understood the rules as well: even if you happen to have the right wood, board breaking is for properly supervised settings like class time only!   Please ask any instructor if you have questions.

As for information about weather cancellations, current students (or anyone who wishes to know) can check the main page of the Independent Karate School website (www.independentkarateschool.com) for announcements.  If in any doubt, parents should feel perfectly free to make their own decisions about the safety of driving conditions.  As much as we appreciate dedication in our students, sometimes it's just not smart to go out there.
