The Boston Red Sox celebrated 35 recipients of the New Hampshire Red Sox Scholarship program, including Kristina Velasquez a student at Merrimack High School, during pre-game ceremonies at Fenway Park Sunday afternoon.

The public high school seniors receive $1,000 scholarships to help pay for college.

The program began in 2010 with 10 schools. Students are chosen based on academic performance, financial need, and community service.

"New Hampshire is a treasured part in Red Sox Nation," said Red Sox Foundation Board Member Linda Pizzuti Henry, wife of principal owner John Henry. "We are thrilled to honor these Granite State college-bound students who have not only demonstrated their excellence in the classroom, but embody the values of Red Sox Nation through their commitment to community service. Helping others is at the core of the Red Sox Foundation's mission and by honoring these students as role models, we hope we can inspire others to join in service in their communities too.”
