Rotary Honors Girl Scouts' Young Women of Distinction

BEDFORD, NH - Through a recent gift to Girl Scouts of the Green and White Mountains, the Merrimack Rotary Club will ensure that top-achieving Girl Scouts are recognized for years to come.

On Jan. 13, Club President Maureen C. Mooney and Vice President R. Brian Snow presented a customized plaque to GSGWM Chief Executive Officer Patricia K. Mellor before a crowd of council executives, board members, and staff.

The plaque, which is prominently displayed in the council’s foyer, will formally recognize annual recipients of the Girl Scouts of the USA’s National Young Women of Distinction Award. This prestigious honor recognizes outstanding Girl Scout Gold Awardees throughout the country.

In late 2015, the award, which included a $1,000 scholarship for each recipient, was presented to three GSGWM members: Courtney Barlotta of Bedford, Madeline Riese of Windham, and Megan McKenna of Bennington, VT.

Mooney said the local Rotary prides itself in giving back, especially when it involves honoring those who serve their community. “Girl Scouts are excellent public servants,” she added. “The Rotary Club’s motto is ‘Service above Self’ and these are young ladies that truly live by that motto. They’re making the world a better place in the process.”
