Teamwork is key at the Independent Karate School

At first glance, it may not be that obvious what teamwork has to do with learning karate.  Isn't martial arts training really a question of developing your own personal skills and abilities?

At the Independent Karate School, teamwork is pretty important, on and off the training floor.

During our classes, students of sufficient age and maturity are sometimes allowed to practice self-defense techniques on one another, with safety modifications as needed.  At other times, instructors will lead an entire class in "forms" (set routines of moves).  Courtesy, good judgment, and graceful cooperation with others are all essential to making these exercises successful.

Our students also learn to work together in other ways.  Last Saturday morning was a good example.  It was a particularly busy day for our black belts: in various teams, they ran regular classes at our Saturday location, participated in our demonstration at Children's Day in Greeley Park, and took care of some volunteer yardwork.  It wasn't easy to get everything done, but in the end things went fine.  Courtesy and good judgment make this kind of teamwork successful too!

Which reminds me: thanks again to all my fellow Karate Moms and Dads who helped with transportation!  I was grateful for the help I received and glad that I was able to give some.  It's that kind of place.
