Hello, all! The Karate Mom hasn't posted recently, due to the combination of circumstances that our family usually experiences in the spring: two baseball schedules + end-of-the-year schoolwork = not too much karate. Thankfully, the Independent Karate School is used to having students with many interests. It's fairly common for even some of our most dedicated students to disappear for a couple of months due to a crunch period in their other activities. That doesn't mean they aren't missed. We certainly miss the IKS community in return, when we can't be around.
It will be summertime before my family can resume its normal karate schedule, but due to a parting in the clouds, I was able to visit our Merrimack school this week and see how everyone is.
After our spring tournament, everyone's focus returns to the school's basic mission: teaching and learning the art of self-defense (or really, character formation--but that is a post for another day). I noticed several students had been promoted to new ranks, including a young lady who will now be training for her black belt exam. Some of our most recent beginners aren't quite beginners anymore: they have received their first promotion, to orange belt, and should feel proud of making a good start.

It's also approaching the time for us to say goodbye to one of our advanced students who will be moving out of the area soon. We will miss her! and we wish her family all the best. Fortunately, the lessons in courtesy, perseverance, and resilience that young people learn at the Independent Karate School have a way of staying with them long after they have gone forth into the world.
In any case, it was good to see everyone, and we look forward to coming back full swing when the season changes.
