The annual tournament of the Independent Karate School is coming right up on Sunday, March 30th, at Bishop Guertin High School in Nashua, and boy, are our kids excited.
All of our regular students are coming to class as much as they can, and trying hard to hone their skills. Our teenage black belts are working hard to help the little ones while still finding time to practice their own very advanced material.
With excitement comes some nervousness, of course. Our white and orange belts have not been to our tournament before. They are hearing a lot about it from older students, but it will still be something new, and some may be just a little worried. Some of our newer black belts will be judging children's events for the first time--they want to do a good job, and are feeling the pressure too. Even our chief referee, one of our most experienced instructors and a man of very steady nerves, is walking around looking, well, a bit thoughtful.

In short, this is the time of year when energy is high in our classes, but mistakes may increase for the time being as well. The challenge for our kids on Sunday will be to turn their nerves into power, and their excitement into concentration.
Of course, this is one very good reason to hold a tournament: we think that learning to perform under pressure will serve our students very well long after they have forgotten which foot to step out with in the form for beginners.
