UNH Poll: 60 Percent of Granite Staters Favor Legalizing Recreational Pot

The University of New Hampshire Survey Center found the strongest support for legalization can be found among liberals (77 percent).

Sixty percent of Granite Staters favor the legalization of recreational marijuana, according to a new poll by the University of New Hampshire Survey Center.

That figure represents an increase from 2013, when UNH’s Granite State Poll found 48 percent favored legalization.

Medical marijuana was legalized in New Hampshire in 2013, but several efforts to legalize recreational marijuana have failed.

“Support for recreational marijuana legalization is strongest among liberals (77 percent support), younger adults (72 percent), those who never attend church (67 percent), and Democrats (67 percent),” the latest poll read. “Opposition is strongest among older residents (59 percent oppose), conservatives (54 percent) and regular churchgoers (53 percent).”

Four states—Colorado, Washington, Alaska, and Oregon—have legalized the sale of recreational marijuana.
