Kevin Skarupa visited with the sixth grade students at the Academy for Science and Design in Nashua on Tuesday March 25, 2014. Skarupa told the students that he felt really lucky to have the job he does and not because he is on television, but because he just loves the science of meteorology. He also talked about a typical day for him, which begins at 1:30 AM when he heads into the weather center at WMUR. Skarupa also discussed how the students could look up into the sky to somewhat predict the weather using clouds and what really controls the seasons in New Hampshire.
“Everything that Mr. Skarupa talked about was really cool, but I think if I had to pick just one thing as my absolute favorite part of his visit, it would have to be when he filmed us to be on TV,” Sixth grader Jared said after Mr. Skarupa had left.
The students had a chance to ask the meteorologist questions which is typically how Kevin Skarupa ends his school visits with area students. What was not typical this time were the questions that the students from the Academy for Science and Design asked. “I typically get asked questions like have you ever made a mistake on the air or if I think they will have another snow day soon” Skarupa said with a laugh “I was asked today if helicopters have issues with contrails and also if cloud seeding has any effect on animals, not typical questions, you can really tell these kids love science.”
