Democrats Take On Voter ID At Potluck Next Week

The Amherst Democratic Committee will be hosting a discussion of the new law in Milford.

What do you think of the new voter ID law?

The Amherst Democratic Committee will sponsor a discussion of the new Voter ID law on Wednesday, Oct. 24 at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Milford. The event starts with a pot luck supper at 6 p.m., followed by a panel discussion at 7 p.m. 

The discussion will be lead by a panel with Amherst town moderator, Steve Coughlan, supervisor of the checklist, Jeanne Ludt and state representative Peter Leishman.

Coughlan and Ludt will discuss the implementation of the new law, and give their perspectives on its effects. Representative Leishman, formerly of Milford, was a member of the committee that considered the law, and will give his background on the discussions leading up to its adoption.

Voters will need to show their identification before voting on Nov. 6. Accepted forms of ID include

  • a drivers license from any state, even if expired
  • a non-driver photo ID issued by the Division of Motor Vehicles;
  • a U.S. military ID;
  • a U.S. passport, even if expired;
  • a valid student ID;
  • a valid photo ID card issued by federal, state, county or municipal government;
  • any photo ID deemed legitimate by a supervisor of the checklist, town or city clerk, or moderator; or verification of identify by a supervisor of the checklist, town or city clerk or moderator.

Those without an acceptable ID on election dat can still vote after signing a "challenged voter affidavit" at the polls. Vouchers are also being given out by town clerks for those without ID, and can be used at your local DMV office to receive one stricly for voting.
