Did you see the announcement on the 4th of July this year about evidence for the discovery of the Higgs Boson (known by some as the so-called “God Particle”)? Did you wonder “What is the Higgs Boson?”, “How significant is that?”, or “Why should I care?”.
Dr. Bryan Higgs, who was trained as an experimental elementary particle physicist (but who is not related to the Higgs Boson), will give a talk and lead a discussion about the Higgs Boson. He will show some videos and use other resources from the Internet, talking not only about the scientific implications of the discovery of the Higgs Boson, but will also try to inject some levity to keep things interesting.
No previous technical or scientific knowledge will be expected of participants, other than a healthy curiosity and a lively interest in what promises to be one of the most significant discoveries in the history of physics. Some of the physical background will be discussed, but will be explained at an introductory level. Questions will be encouraged.
