She will discuss the state's efforts to combat substance abuse in New Hampshire, including strengthening youth prevention programs.

MILFORD - Gov. Maggie Hassan, D-Exeter, will speak at the Community Action for Safe Teens “The Science of Addiction” event, where she will discuss the state’s efforts to combat the substance abuse crisis in New Hampshire, including strengthening youth prevention programs in our schools and communities.
Community Action for Safe Teens is dedicated to preventing substance abuse and promoting healthy choices for youth throughout the Souhegan Valley, and tomorrow’s event is aimed at supporting its Building a Bridge campaign to develop evidence-based actions plans. To strengthen the state’s efforts to combat the heroin and opioid crisis, Hassan has focused on a comprehensive approach to support law enforcement and strengthen prevention, treatment and recovery, according to a press statement. In November 2015, Hassan and the Executive Council called for a special session of the legislature to take up substance abuse legislation, and the Governor put forward a comprehensive legislative proposal.

Hassan signed two expedited, bipartisan bills last week that reflect several measures that were included in the Governor’s comprehensive proposal, including: increasing the penalties for the illegal sale and distribution of fentanyl, ensuring that they match those for heroin; streamlining access to treatment by requiring all insurance companies to use the same evaluation criteria and removing prior authorization requirements in certain cases; strengthening the state’s prescription drug monitoring program by mandating greater use by prescribers, expanding access to the program and permitting state funding for it; and adding two members to the Board of Medicine, including a pain management specialist.
