Milford Students Give Musical Tribute to Teacher as He Fights Disease

Milford High School students past and present pay tribute to MHS band director Jim Sandahl, who is struggling with lung disease.

Milford students and alumni are honoring a beloved music teacher using the very skills he has helped them develop over the years.

Chorus and band students recorded their tribute to their band director Jim Sandahl, who has been diagnosed with terminal lung disease.

Former students wanted to organize a concert for him, but he is too ill to travel. Instead they inspired band director Brad Smith, chorus director Jennifer Kennedy Erdody and accompanist Kimberly Whitehead to get the kids together to create a lasting musical gift.

The choir sang the song “Home” by Phil Philips in their video, while the band dedicated their musical performance to the legacy of this beloved teacher. Spartan Music Milford High School posted the videos on their website Wednesday.

"On behalf of your former students, and the current MHS Chorus and Concert Band we would like to thank you for a lifetime of wonderful memories, and for the lasting legacy that you have left here at Milford High School. Our hearts and thoughts are with you and your family."

Marlena Phillips, a former student of Sandahl, recently gave her musical tribute to a man who helped find her voice.

“Jim was personally one of the most precious teachers in all of my school years, giving me singing opportunities and constant encouragement to give a career in music a serious shot. After all these years, Jim STILL comes to see me perform locally.” wrote Phillips on her Facebook page.

Former students also shared their stories of how Sandahl touched their lives on Facebook.

Michelle Knowles: The smile on his face was always there to welcome you into his class (I remember it like it was yesterday). Some teachers you never forget...for me Mr. Sandahl was one of them! Wonderful job to all that put this together.

David Fraser: Jim is more than just a teacher. He is a friend, a leader, a mentor. A GENUINE role model for all. He made being a "band geek" so worth it! Always pushing you to challenge yourself and accomplish your goals. I thank you Jim for being one of those teachers who inspired me to become the person I am today. I will always remember those times and continue to share those memories. Brad and Jenn- Thank you for creating such a great tribute for a dear friend and his family.
