“In these uncertain times, our state has led the way in many respects when it comes to battling the COVID-19 pandemic. However, I am disappointed to see that our legislature will not be taking up Nursing Home Reform prior to September,” Anderson stated.
“I wish we could blame all of this on the pandemic, but what COVID really did was show the glaring needs in senior care throughout the state. According to a CT Mirror article, “With a second wave surely coming our way, the state’s largest nursing home association is calling on our elected leaders to double the supply of emergency room beds and increase the funds this year to maintain a solid standard of care.” I stand with them.

The issues slated to be brought up in the special session are incredibly important to the fabric of our state and nation, specifically police and absentee ballot reform Telehealth, and a cap on insulin pricing, but we can’t let seniors with acute medical care needs see their needs be overlooked or delayed. I am concerned especially after reports from the state Department of Public Health that 90 people, mostly in nursing homes and assisted-living facilities, tested positive for COVID-19 based on flawed testing analysis.

I am fully in support of the ongoing investigation into how nursing homes performed during the pandemic, but why leave for later when everyone’s ready to begin the call?

“This is not only a burden for our seniors but is also an indelible fear for the families and loved ones of those seniors in these homes. Months without contact for many. There are things we can do now. We cannot afford to wait.”
