10 Things I Learned From Watching 'The Simpsons' Marathon

12 Days of The Simpsons? Let's do this!

Being a part of the Generation X, I was lucky enough to witness the beginning of MTV, VH1 and The Simpsons. Unfortunately there were several of us who had loving but still semi-strict parents that felt such entertaining “luxuries” were badly influential therefore the only time we got to enjoy them were when we spent time at other kids houses or when our parents were out. (Sorry Mom and Dad)

Obviously times have changed and what parents once considered inappropriate and corruptive are now looked at as slap-stick animation and well let’s admit it, kind of funny. Yes there are some things that are deemed inappropriate and I agree this is definitely not a show for the tweens, however there were a few occasions that this show made me laugh. (For example when Maggie was dancing in her crib to “Sex Bomb”).

I have a had a few friends who insist the show is a waste of brain cells and just outright stupid which is fine because like anything, not everyone is going to like what I do. However with all the negativity in the news right now, sometimes a little bit of stupidity can be a good thing and in my opinion anything that makes me laugh is definitely a positive.

With that being said when I heard from my teenage sons that FXX was airing a 12 day marathon for The Simpsons I decided to make a small event of it. We set our upstairs television (downstairs is reserved for XBOX and Preseason football games) to FXX and pulled up their episode guide. We chose a couple Christmas episodes and also the two-part ‘Who Killed Mr. Burns” and set the DVR.

We watched a lot of episodes, bought a lot of pizza and pretty much enjoyed the 12 days to their fullest. We didn’t watch them all, that’s just crazy, but we did watch a good share and in all honesty, it was kind of fun. Not only did I finally get to see so many episodes that I was forbidden to watch as a child but I was able to spend time with my own children laughing. It was definitely a great (and affordable) way to end the Summer.

Top 10 Things I learned from watching The Simpsons marathon:

1. No matter how many episodes I watched, I never got bored. (We did not watch them all but I am amazed my television held up!)

2. I have determined that my favorite characters are Maggie and Santa’s Little Helper (does he even count being a dog?).

3. In twenty-five seasons the characters have never shown any signs of aging yet that does not appear to bother me.

4. Ned Flanders was crazy before he was so religiously-a-doodle-ee. (See episode “Hurricane Neddy”, Season 8)

5. Moe could make a great dad if he really wanted to be. (See episode “Moe Baby Blues”, Season 14)

6. There were so many songs and musical numbers that it could certainly give “Glee” a run for its money.

7. Homer is a genius at heart and could be in person if he kept the crayon in his brain removed. (See episode “HOMR”, Season 11)

8. Episode “one” was my favorite episode. (“Simpson’s Roasting on an Open Fire”, Season 1).

9. Homer and Marge actually made a really cute couple in the flashbacks of their youth however I never realized how many times Homer and Marge have sex in the show. (Kind of creepy).

10. Ned Flanders needs another wife and maybe a daughter because his two sons are boring, his first wife Maude was annoying and his second wife Edna Krabappel (we miss you Marcia Wallace) left too soon.

Thank you FXX for an amazing 12 days of The Simpsons. It’s been a nice run though Memory Lane. Now time for the Block Parties!
