CONCORD, NH — A California man was found guilty in court after prosecutors said he tried to take $50,000 from a 92-year-old Pelham resident as part of a tech support scam.

A jury in the Hillsborough County Superior Court - Southern District in Nashua found Yalei Li, 39, of Rosemead, CA, guilty of attempted theft by deception after a two-day trial. According to Attorney General John M. Formella, the evidence showed Li went to the woman's home late in the evening of April 8, 2025, intending to take the cash from the resident. The filing said the effort was part of a well-orchestrated tech support scam that began with a malicious pop-up alert on the victim's computer.

The victim was led to believe that her bank accounts had been compromised and that she needed to pay an agent of her bank to keep her money safe, according to the announcement.

Li now faces a maximum sentence of seven-and-a-half to 15 years in the New Hampshire State Prison and a $4,000 fine. Sentencing is scheduled for June 10, 2026, at 1:30 p.m.

The case was investigated by the Pelham Police Department. Assistant Attorneys General Nancy DeAngelis and Amanda Purcell prosecuted the case, with assistance from paralegal Rachelle Simon and victim-witness advocate Rose Lamerand.
