Doctor Discusses Symptoms, Tests and Treatments as Illness from Cyclosporiasis Spreads Across U.S.

In the last several weeks, the Centers for Disease Control has catalogued an above-average number of cases of cyclosporiasis, an intestinal illness caused by Cyclospora parasites. A large concentration of illness has been centered in the Midwest, but 31 states, including New Hampshire, have reported cases since May 1, 2026.

People infected may or may not experience symptoms, and the time between becoming infected and becoming sick can range from 2 days to 2 weeks or more, making it even harder to track a common source. Previous outbreaks in the U.S. have been linked to various types of fresh produce.

Dr. Dilip Yarabothu, Medical Director of Southern New Hampshire Health Immediate Care locations, spoke with WMUR-TV about how the illness is diagnosed and what people need to know if they become sick.
