A soft spot for kitties

Animals at the Nashua Humane Society now have comfortable beds, toys, and food, thanks to the Girl Scouts of Troop 63991. They sewed the cat beds themselves and spent many hours on a collection drive which was recently donated to the shelter. For their work, the troop has earned the highest honor possible for Girl Scouts in grades 4 and 5, the Girl Scout Bronze Award.

During their collection drive outside Market Basket, they talked to the public about the needs of the shelter and for animals to be adopted and receive veterinary care. They even made hand-drawn cards to draw attention to the animals up for adoption.

The girls honed their sewing skills to make the beds. Some were so excited about the project that after learning how it's done they went home and made even more beds, both for the project and their pets at home.

To ensure public awareness, the troop made a campaign video about the shelter, animals available for adoption, what to do if you see a stray cat or dog, and how to donate or volunteer at the shelter.

The troop took advantage of a Take Action grant made available by Girl Scouts of the Green and White Mountains, which was spent on materials.
