Bacteria Alerts At NH Pond, Lake

PELHAM, NH — Bacteria alerts were issued for Long Pond in Pelham and Lake Monomonac in Rindge, state health officials announced Friday. Elevated levels of cyanobacteria were found in both bodies of water. Swimmers were advised to stay out of the water and boaters were urged to stay away if they see deep clouds of green or blue clouds or flecks in the water.

The warnings, which were a "precautionary measure for short term exposure," are in effect until further notice. Samples from both bodies of water showed cyanobacteria readings above 70,000 cells per milliliter.

Cyanobacteria is toxic to humans and animals. Side effects includes skin irritation, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Long-term effects include liver and central nervous system damage.
