Black Pearl Sewing Joins Nashua’s Arts Community

Expanding Nashua’s vibrant arts community and supporting economic development, Black Pearl Sewing has opened near the city’s center. This studio is dedicated to sewing and quilting, providing a welcoming space for sewists and quilt artists of all skill levels to practice and enhance their craft. Studio owner Simone Rigden will host an open house during the Columbus Day weekend, October 11–13, inviting community members to explore the studio and discover new creative opportunities.

“I started Black Pearl Sewing because I love teaching, and I want to spread joy,” Rigden says. “When I see a piece of fabric, I want to help determine its best use. Is it a dress, a wall hanging, or the starting point for a large, beautiful quilt?” With more than 30 years of design, sewing, and teaching experience, Rigden guides even the most inexperienced sewists in developing their artistic skills.

“Some students bring a pattern they want to fit their exact measurements, while others are looking to redesign a piece of clothing they’re upcycling,” says Rigden. “Still others seek help figuring out cosplay outfits or getting through the next step in a pattern they’re stuck on.” Rigden assists quilters with design, color choices, various techniques, and pattern adjustments.

Black Pearl Sewing features a comfortable, well-equipped studio where students need bring only their chosen fabrics, threads, and inspiration. “Many people prefer to bring their sewing machines, but those without one are welcome to use studio machines and supplies,” Rigden shares. In addition to measuring, cutting, pressing tools, students have access to a unique collection of supplies Rigden has gathered over her many years of teaching, like an AccuQuilt Studio 2 fabric cutter.

Group and one-on-one instruction are available for all skill levels, including beginner classes, costume-making classes, and an Elizabeth Hartmann Fan Club for admirers of the quilt designer. Open studio sessions are also offered. “Some participants come not just for instruction, but for the camaraderie that comes from connecting with like-minded individuals, who can quickly turn into friends.”

The open house is free and open to the public on the dates and times below. Refreshments will be served. Rigden invites guests to bring their ideas and projects for discussion. The building is wheelchair accessible, and elevator access is available from the lobby.
