Body Scanners in Place at Manchester Airport

The updated technology, still optional, provides TSA agent a more generic look at passengers.

Manchester-Boston Regional Airport has introduced three new body scanners that eliminate passenger-specific images, instead projecting any detected metallic objects on a generic screen (see example in the photo gallery).

The millimeter wave Advanced Imaging Technology (AIT) machines are designed to enhance security by safely screening passengers for metallic and non-metallic threats — including weapons, explosives and other objects concealed under layers of clothing, according to the TSA.

Imaging technology screening is safe for all travelers, and the technology meets all known national and international health and safety standards, the TSA said. Energy emitted by millimeter wave technology is said to be 1,000 times less than the international limits and guidelines.

Officials say passengers who opt out of the scanner can still pass through the  old-style metal detectors and submit to a pat-down search.
