Rather than increase the gas tax by 83% over four years (costing NH consumers $100 million per year when fully implemented), why not reform the highway funding laws so that 100% of the money raised by the gas tax goes to the maintenance of roads and bridges? Currently it is 73%. Why divert the money when it is needed for the roads and bridges?
Meanwhile the Turnpike Fund, which is funded solely by tolls, has a lot of money due to toll increases over the past few years. Use that money to fund the State Police....
This change may not add up to enough money to cover the cost of road maintenance, but the politicians should make this change before coming to the taxpayer looking for more money... We are taxed enough already.
