The Ugly American

Hypocrisy is at the heart of foreign criticism of the "ugly American". The simplest farmer knows disrespect when they see it. Americans can't seem to respect each other.

What do people see when they look at us? We've heard Americans vacationing overseas are viewed as arrogant and rude. There is much more just under the surface; a social problem that starts at home.

The most recent symptom is talk of sexual assault in the military. Makes no difference where it occurrs, it stems from the same societal problem. This happens frequently in the workplace, homes, churches and government. Anywhere there is an authority structure there will be those that take advantage. Executives tend to view their management structure as far more important than the fate of a few lower-level employees.

Criminal behavior among management personnel is considered indiscretion; unless of course the news goes public and the top executives are embarassed or named in a lawsuit. The culture has been tolerated, even encouraged, for many years. What did you think happens when bullies become adults? Our military has a much bigger problem than sexual assaults, but we can use this as an indicator.

The lowest level of military leadership is tasked with carrying out the orders of their superiors. What happens when you get a bad manager? Complaints will get you labeled trouble-maker, insubordinate, or worse. The complainer becomes the problem. Our military leaders are more concerned with the appearance of a solid chain of command, than in a chain of integrity and trust in leadership. Did you really believe that leaders are held to a higher standard?

Other countries see our bad behavior clearly. They recognize it because they see it in their own. Yet we claim to be enlightened, with democracy and freedom for all. We use our money and power as crudely as any schoolyard bully. Hypocrisy is what makes the American ugly; this is the main complaint against us. How could we possibly promote wonderful ideals when we allow our own daughters, sisters, and mothers to be treated horribly within the ranks of our military?

Who will enforce standards of behavior? It won't be the leaders still in charge. Look to efforts made by the Catholic Church for an example of the same dynamics. The structure itself allowed these problems to perpetuate. The structures cannot rationally be changed, so the only alternative is for an outside force to have full access, with no inteference. The organization will never willingly cooperate, so it must be a forced change. Until there is acknowledgement of this required course of action there can never be any change, only the appearance.

Demotions and jail time are justified for military personnel committing crimes. No rank is immune. All of us can open our eyes and ears to make a difference. This problem is not confined to the military, and you know it. The only way to "win hearts and minds" is to start at home. Don't worry, other countries are watching closely.
