As we tend our gardens, we often seek out plants to fill an empty corner or provide the perfect touch on a border. However, none of us want to see an invasive monstrosity take over our spaces. You are invited to attend the Nashua Garden Club’s June program, ‘Invasive Plants’ to learn about invasive species, their major characteristics, ecological concerns and strategies for controlling them. This session is open to the public free of charge and will begin promptly at 7:00 PM on Wednesday June 3rd, at the First Baptist Church, 121 Manchester Street, Nashua NH.

The evening program will be presented by Donna Lussier, UNH Extension Master Gardener since 2017, presenter with the Master Gardener Speakers Bureau since 2018 and active member of the Nashua Garden Club. Ms. Lussier is extensively involved with her own gardens and works at a garden center during the growing season. As an advocate for education and with a BS degree in nursing, she has been involved in teaching various groups in several hospitals for many years. She continues to educate others on various gardening topics through the Master Gardeners Speakers Bureau and periodically presents to libraries, garden clubs, and other community organizations. In addition to the Nashua Garden Club, Donna is also a member of the Pelham Garden Group and New Hampshire Federation of Garden Clubs. Her goal is to share her gardening knowledge with the community so others may reap the enjoyable benefits of gardening including bonding with others, a feeling of personal fulfillment and building a connection with their own gardens and nature. She equates gardening with nursing: nurturing, care, productiveness, and fulfillment will result in a better outcome.

During this session, attendees will learn the official definition of invasive species and what differentiates an invasive from a native species. Ms. Lussier will discuss various concerns surrounding invasive plants and their common ecological characteristics. To assist attendees that may have invasive plant issues, the discussion will also include tips on how to identify these plants along with local examples and a number of practical control strategies.

All are welcome and requested to arrive by 6:45 for this 7:00 PM session. Following the presentation, there will be time for Q&A and light refreshments. A members-only business meeting will follow. To inquire about membership in the Nashua Garden Club, please see the the membership page on the club website. Further questions can be sent to NashuaGardenClub@Gmail.com .
