We've all seen them - the commercials with the pictures of the animals looking so sad with the voice over telling you how horrible things are for these animals and how you can help. But have you ever really thought where that money is going?
Take The Humane Society of United States (HSUS). You can find their financials on their website - financials which show CEO Wayne Pacelle being paid over $248,000 (for approximately 40 hours a week) PLUS an "estimated" amount for "other compensation" in excess of $40,000. There are over 30 employees who were making over $100,000 in 2010. HSUS took in over $148,000,000 in 2010, with expenditures of over $125,000 - the majority of which were salaries, mailings, advertising, fundraisers and lobbyists. Matter of fact, they try to push through at least a thousand bills a year at state and federal levels.
But they're trying to get through bills to protect that animals right? And they give lots of money to shelters and rescues for the animals right? Plus they run their own shelters right? NO, NO and NO.
While at first glance the bills may be to protect animals, under further "investigation" they are to strip our rights. Northeast District of HSUS have repeatedly, every year, tried to bring forth a bill limiting breeding in this state. Every year, our legislators vote it down, but time is wasted every year to bring it up again and again. But breeding bills are good right? NOT The type of breeding bills HSUS brings forth are overly restrictive and geared to stop all breeding. Even though they admit (on their site) that euthanasia rates are down drastically and that shelter intakes have been reduced, they still are pounding out their rhetoric of "over-population" The restrictive measures HSUS wishes to impose consist of regulated cage sizes. I, along with many others in the state (and country) don't keep our dogs in cages, but if that bill passed, we would have too. The bill would've made it mandatory that breeders provide 24/7 access to the outside. I bred chihuahuas so I trust you can agree it isn't safe for my dogs to have 24/7 access outside. These are just a few of the points.
As far as giving money to shelters or rescues, HSUS' financials show that less than 1% of their money is donated (HSUS has always disagreed with this but this year even they admit it's 7% which is still a poor number) They spend more on sending out those flyer trying to get people to send more money than they do trying to help any animals. They will help a shelter train personnel or plan for expansions, but they CHARGE the shelters for that.
Finally, HSUS has NO shelters of their own.
This is just the beginning. Please follow along on this journey where you will learn of HSUS' and other AR groups' deplorable tactics to not only encourage more donations, but also how they literally stomp on breeders rights all in the name of "animal welfare" Find out how both HSUS and ASPCA have been indicted under the Federal RICO Act (racketeer influenced and corrupt organizations), what their ulterior plan is - and when you, as a pet owner, may become their next target.
