Market Basket Gets High Marks In New National Store Survey

A retailer preference survey of 10,000 households across the United States gave the New England store chain praise for pricing, service.

TEWKSBURY, MA — The region’s largest supermarket chain received praise from a new retailer preference survey — with customers making it the third most respected grocery store chain in the United States.

A British customer data science company, dunnhumby, surveyed 10,000 households online for its most recent retailer preference index. The study, the fifth of its kind, found Market Basket ranked third behind Amazon and H.E.B., a 340-store chain based in Texas. Amazon came in first in the study last year. Customers were asked to rate the customer service, pricing, selection, quality, operations and speeds, and other key factors offered by stores grocery stores.

Market Basket was recognized for “outstanding customer service, competitive pricing, an extensive variety of high-quality products, and an unparalleled commitment to its employees,” according to the survey. The chain received higher marks than Trader Joe’s, Walmart, Costco, and other retail brands.

David McLean, the operations manager at Market Basket, said the company was gratified to learn customer value helped lead the chain place third in the survey.

“(Customers) highlighted continued excellence on price and operations, which is rewarding as our team seeks to fulfill our commitment to our ‘More for Your Dollar’ shopping philosophy,” he said. “The acknowledgment is truly a testament to how hard our associates have worked and continue to work to serve our valued customers.”

In the past, Consumer Reports has also highlighted the store, calling it the top supermarket operator in the Northeast. According to the study, a family that spends $200 per week at Market Basket can save close to $1,800 annually when compared to other grocery stores.

The company has nearly 90 stores in New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Maine, and Rhode Island and is in the process of building three more locations — including a third location in Concord, off Exit 17 in Penacook.
