MicroSociety Academy Honors 8th Graders with Drive-In Ceremony
Despite COVID-19 social distancing regulations, MicroSociety Academy organized a memorable outdoor ceremony to honor 8th grade graduates

MicroSociety Academy Charter School (MACS), a tuition-free K-8 public charter school in Nashua, made it a priority to send off their 8th grade class in a way that was both memorable and exciting. Beginning with a delivery parade, MACS teachers and administrators met each student and their families to drop off graduation caps, keepsake banners, signed cards, and invitations to the promotion ceremony that was to be held the following week.

Guidelines from the Department of Education specified that in-person graduations needed to maintain social distancing throughout the entire event. While several graduation alternatives were considered, MACS decided to organize a Drive-In event allowing families to watch from their vehicles. FunFlicks, an outdoor movie rental company, provided an inflatable movie screen with a speaker transmission system that connected to car radios for sound. The event was also live streamed on Facebook for families and friends who were unable to attend.
The ceremony commenced with awards for perfect attendance, individual subject achievements, and other special recognitions including Top Falcon, Employee of the Year, and Citizen of the Year. Following the awards, families got comfortable and watched a video consisting of speeches from MACS Board Chair Tom Dougherty, former teacher Matt Clermont, founding student Natalie Charlton, and Micro City President Jane Baymar. Each 8th grader also submitted a pre-recorded video sharing their fondest school memories and farewells.

The video concluded with a slideshow that reminisced on the students’ early years showing clips from 4th grade to their final weeks in middle school. Families showed their appreciation by honking in unison and teachers waved as the 8th graders drove away.
