Mysterious Powder Found At Nashua School Identified

NASHUA, NH — Authorities have identified a mysterious powder found at a Nashua elementary school last month. The powder, found spread over the lawn of the Broad Street Elementary School September 18, turned out to be a harmless fungus. A hazmat team responded to the school as a precaution.

A sample of the substance was sent to the state health laboratory and the results were released this week. (Sign up for free daily newsletters and breaking news alerts from Nashua Patch.)

"All involved organizations have been notified of the findings, and the area in question was deemed safe and returned to normal use," Nashua Deputy fire Chief Karl Gerhard said in a statement. "The substance sample was cultured and found to be a 'mixed growth suggestive of soil organisms' or fungus."

Gerhard added, "The City of Nashua thanks all agencies involved in fully resolving this unusual incident."
