Nashua Father Sentenced for Driving Drunk in Crash That Killed Son

A Nashua father this week was sentenced to up to seven years in prison for driving drunk in a February 2014 crash that killed his 14-year-old son.

Nghia Huynh, 39, pleaded guilty Wednesday to negligent homicide, WMUR reported.

Police said on Feb. 21, Huynh downed five shots of brandy then drove to Kittery, Maine to pick up his son, Kobe, who had terminal cancer. On the way back, Huynh crashed on the Everett Turnpike in Merrimack and two vehicles struck his vehicle, police said.

“I killed my son,” he told police at the time, according to the Union Leader. Police said Huynh’s blood-alcohol level was twice the legal limit.

“The best gift that God ever gave to me and the happiest day of my life was when my son was born, and the saddest day and darkest day of my life was when my son was gone,” Huynh said in court Wednesday, according to WMUR.

Kobe Huynh was an honor student. He liked baseball and admired firefighters. He was made an honorary member of the Westbrook (Maine) fire department and Bates College baseball team.

“He was a boy with a pure heart, always assuring us he was going to be okay,” his family wrote in his obituary. His was a life well lived leaving behind a legacy for all of us to be proud of.”
