NASHUA, NH – Nashua Police Chief Andrew Lavoie will retire effective this summer, with Deputy Chief Michael Carignan taking his place on Aug. 1, the Nashua Police Commission announced on Wednesday. Lavoie has served in the Nashua PD for 32 years, including the past 4½ years as police chief.

“Chief Lavoie’s commitment and involvement in numerous community programs and services has set a positive example for others to follow,” Commissioner James Tollner said in a release. “His accomplishments include the forming of Nashua Community Conversations on Race & Justice, which has successfully enhanced relationships between police and Nashua’s diverse population. Chief Lavoie has also served on the Board of Directors for Bridges and the Nashua Exchange Club, and is active in the Nashua Safe Stations program.”

Tollner announced that the Nashua Police Commission had unanimously selected Carignan as Lavoie’s successor. Carignan has been the deputy chief for four years, and has been a member of the department since 1993. A graduate of UMass-Lowell and Rivier College, Carignan is on the Board of Directors for Marguerite’s Place, the Nashua Police Athletic League and My Brother’s Keeper.
