Nashua Student Wins Press Award: College Notes

Concord, Milford, Bow, and Loudon college students received awards and honors recently. Here's a roundup of their accolades.

NASHUA, NH — Christina Laird, a sophomore journalism and mass communication major at Bob Jones University, was recently recognized by the South Carolina Press Association (SCPA) at the Collegiate Annual News Contest on April 6, at The Marriot in Columbia, SC. The SCPA Collegiate News Contest recognizes the best in South Carolina collegiate journalism. Collegiate staff members compete against other colleges and universities in 21 categories, including writing, design, photography and illustration. Laird, a resident of Nashua, received First Place in Arts and Entertainment Story for her work on BJU's student newspaper, The Collegian. The Collegian staff won first place, Page One Design, and second place, Student Government Beat Coverage. Additionally, The Collegian staff was honored with second place in the category of General Excellence, which recognizes all aspects of the publication.

Megan Reese of Concord was recently initiated into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation's oldest and most selective all-discipline collegiate honor society. Reese was initiated at Arkansas State University. Reese is among approximately 30,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni to be initiated into Phi Kappa Phi each year. Membership is by invitation only and requires nomination and approval by a chapter.

Marrissa H. Allen has been selected for membership into the St. Lawrence University chapter of Psi Chi, the international psychology honorary society. Allen is a member of the Class of 2020 and is majoring in English and psychology. Allen attended Milford High School. To be eligible for membership, students must have an overall grade-point average (GPA) of at least 3.3, a psychology average of at least 3.4 and be in the top 35 percent of their class.

Ireann (Ivy) Noel, a member of the Colby-Sawyer College class of 2020 from Concord, participated in the 77th New Annual Eastern New England Biological Conference (ENEBC) on April 13, at Emmanuel College in Boston, MA. The ENEBC is an opportunity for biology majors to showcase research to fellow undergraduates from more than 40 member institutions. The conference features oral presentations, poster sessions, awards and a keynote lecture. This year's lecture was given by Nobel Laureate Dr. Jack Szostak who contributed to the discovery of how chromosomes are protected by telomeres and the enzyme telomerase.

Assumption recognized 75 students with awards for academic excellence during the 35th Annual Honors Convocation on April 15. Awards ranged from departmental honors to special recognitions, to Assumption's highest honor, Augustine Scholarships. During the ceremony, Christian Copeley, of Concord, and a member of the Class of 2019, received the departmental award for liturgical music.

Charles Smith of Bow, has been named to the Elmira College Dean's List for the Winter 2019 Term. Full-time undergraduate students registered for at least 12 computable credit hours and earning a term grade point average of 3.6 or higher at the end of Term I or Term II are placed on the Dean's List at the College.

Meegan Ann McCarthy has received the Clara Dougherty Brown Art Award from Greensboro College. McCarthy is a senior psychology and art major from Loudon. Greensboro College provides a liberal arts education grounded in the traditions of the United Methodist Church and fosters the intellectual, social, and, spiritual development of all students while supporting their individual needs.
