Obama, Romney Close

The presidential race between President Barack Obama and Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney in New Hampshire remains ever so close, according to the University of New Hampshire Survey Center.

In mid-August, UNH's WMUR Granite State Poll had Obama 49 percent to Romney's 46 percent, with 2 percent for another candidate and 4 percent undecided. In April, the poll had the president with a 9-point lead over the former Massachusetts governor.

Andy Smith, executive director of the UNH Survey Center, said a gender gap appears in this battleground state, reflecting a national trend.

Women prefer Obama over Romney by 16 percent.

Men prefer Romney over Obama by 11 percent.

And the race for New Hampshire's powerful and often undefined, late-breaking undeclared voters? The battle for the hearts and minds of independents is also close: 42 percent for Obama, 39 percent for Romney.

Twin campaign appearances in New Hampshire on Sept. 7. Obama and Vice President Joe Biden, with their wives, are scheduled , with remarks around noon. Romney is scheduled to in Nashua at approximately 7:10 tonight.
