Police: Drunk Man Clipped Cop with his Car

Nashua Police sergeant injured while assisting another vehicle in the breakdown lane of the Everett Turnpike.

A Massachusetts man is facing a slew of charges after allegedly clipping a police sergeant on the Everett Turnpike last month.

Zachary Rowland, 23, of Townsend Street in Pepperell, MA, was arrested on Nov. 28, and charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated, felony conduct after an accident, disobeying a police officer, operating without a valid license, and motorist duties when approaching highway emergencies.

According to police, a sergeant was driving north on the turnpike when he came across a disabled vehicle near Exit 4 at a little past midnight on Nov. 28. The sergeant stopped to assist the stranded motorist, called for a tow truck, and placed flares in the road. While speaking with the truck driver and the motorist, another motorist reportedly drove by and drifted into the breakdown lane and struck the officer with the vehicle’s side mirror and kept driving.

“The passenger side mirror struck the officer on his arm and across his back, causing the mirror to break off the vehicle,” according to police. “(The sergeant), who sustained minor injury, entered his police vehicle and gave chase as the vehicle accelerated away.”

The sergeant followed the vehicle and stopped it at Main Dunstable Road.
