Scouts Return from Colorado Wilderness Adventure

The scouts participated in an epic 10-day high adventure trip that included 6 days of backpacking in the San Juan Mountains and Weminuche Wilderness Area north of Durango, Colorado. The scouts (ages 13-17) backpacked for six days, culminating with a 14,000+ summit climb to Mount Windom. “This was the toughest physical challenge that I have ever done!” was a reoccurring theme from carrying a backpack for 6-8 hours each day. Perseverance, teamwork and training paid off as they all agreed it was one of the best things they have ever done.

After the backpack, the scouts did several hikes in Mesa Verde National Park. The park is the home of the Ancestral Pueblo people and has over 4500 archeological sites and several cliff dwellings. The troop wrapped up their trip with a day of white water rafting on the Animas River and a Texas style BBQ.

Troop 19 has 35 youth members and meets at the First Baptist Church on Manchester Street on Tuesday nights from 7pm to 8:30pm. We are actively looking for more boys’ ages 10 ½ - 17 to join. Upcoming activities include several camping trips, a ski/snowboard trip, community service projects, biking, fishing, canoeing and more. We have an Open House on Tuesday, September 13th but you can drop in on any Tuesday night. Our Cub Scout Pack meets on Thursday nights and younger youth are welcome to join Pack 19.
