Nashua Students Qualify for Math League Championship in Houston

One Grade Six team member has also qualified to attend a prestigious John Hopkins Center of Talented Youth award ceremony

Nashua, N.H.Last weekend, World Academy’s Grade Six math team – along with one advanced Grade Five student – placed second in the New Hampshire Math League State Championship that was held at Plymouth State University.

Team members, Aya Eyceoz, Veronika Luchanok, Ian Hagberg, and Ria Kundu, have qualified to compete both as individuals and as a team at the Math League National Championships in Houston, Texas this June. Also scoring high enough to advance based on their individual performance was Hrushikesh Sankar, Perry Mourtzinos, Rikhav Shah, Naia Springer, and Ishika Chourasia.

In each state where Math League held a state championship in 2015, the top ten students in each grade level and the top five four-person teams are qualified to participate in the national championship. In total, World Academy has the opportunity to send nine students for both the individual and team-based national championship contests this year.

“This team never ceases to amaze me with their level of focus and preparation leading up to these competitions,” says Srilakshmi Sankar, a first-year math teacher at World Academy, and coach of the young math team. “Their level of maturity is far beyond their years. It’s such a pleasure to be their coach and witness their continued run of success and personal growth.”

MathLeague.org is an organization dedicated to helping students from grades 3 through 12 learn math through contests, providing students with an educationally enriching opportunity to participate in an academically-oriented activity for children with exceptional mathematical aptitude.

“Each of these contests is a learning experience that provides the perfect boost in communicative skills for these students,” says Kathy Nelson, Head of School at World Academy. “Finding success in front of large crowds and competing with their peers provides an invaluable boost to their self-esteem and confidence. We could not be more proud of these students for all that they continue to accomplish and how much they’ve grown.”

Aya Eyceoz, a member the qualifying team, has also completed the John Hopkins University Center of Talented Youth (SCAT) exam. She scored in the 99% percentile in mathematics. The score is high enough that she qualifies for the Grand Award Ceremony conducted by John Hopkins University.

According to the JHU website, less than 30% of students who test qualify to attend their award ceremonies. “Scoring at these top levels is a great achievement and should be a source of pride for Aya,” adds Nelson. “Her verbal score was also high enough that she will be taking an online course this summer, which is a true honor.”

In February 2015, World Academy’s Sixth Grade Math Team also participated in a contest hosted by MathLeague.com, another math competition organization, where the students placed third in the NH region, and 13th in the New England region out of 99 participating schools.
