42 Portsmouth Residents Participate In Holiday Lights Contest

Three residents will be feted at the Jan. 9 city council meeting for winning the kids' choice, traditional, and creative display categories.

PORTSMOUTH, NH — The 2022 Citywide Neighborhood Committee Holiday Lights Contest winners have been announced and will be celebrated at the Portsmouth City Council meeting on Jan. 9, 2023.

Forty-two residents participated this year. The entries were judged by committee members, along with the following children: Henry Ahn, Lillian Carrol, Ainsely and Bresnan Chisholm, Hugh Gatchell, Elliot and Isobel Kittle, Anne and Lucy Martin, and TJ Srimouksavanh.

The Best Traditional winner was John Chavez of 80 Pine St., the Most Creative winner was Matt and Nicole Beyer of 580 F.W. Hartford Drive; and the Kids’ Choice was Ray Clauson of 33 Madison St.

“The Holiday Lights Contest is a wonderful way to bring neighborhoods together and to celebrate with one another,” Mayor Deaglan McEachern said. “Each year, so many families put so much time and effort into the displays and into the judging, helping to bring holiday spirit and light up our beautiful city.”

McEachern thanked the city’s business community for supporting the contest, including Jay and Amanda McSharry of the JGroup, who donated $500, Ed Hayes of Ricci Lumber, who donated $500 and McKinnons, Hannafords, and Market Basket, which donated $250 each.

“The generous support of these Portsmouth businesses is greatly appreciated,” he said. “In addition, Seacoast Media Group was an in-kind sponsor, providing publicity and advertising.”

Honorable mentions include Tim MacCannell, Mike Lianza, Kris Kraft, Cindy Ward, Molly Shaw Wilson, Julie McCann and a special commendation to Al Bailey. Honorable mentions for Kids’ Choice include Heather Pettis, Polly Dale, Joe and Linda Arsenault, and Lyndsey Bouzakine.
